This Weekend at the Farm- Come on In!

Hello all,

Another weekend is upon us!

Thanks for all your input from my last e-mail.  We had a nice bump in attendance the past two days, over 70 on Wednesday and 60 yesterday. Hoping for 100 today and tomorrow.  Let's keep both Jesse and I on our feet! Remember, if you are in a hurry, let  us know. If you aren't and want to take a stroll or hang out, you are more than welcome.
The field is glorious now and the sunflowers (which are doubling as bean poles for our dried beans) are spectacular!
We have chairs in the patio area where you can sit and chat.

At long last the summer vegetables and fruits are maturing! We have, as Pablo says, (almost) everything!  Marrowfat Shell beans are not quite ready but soon they will join the roster! Here's most of what we have: lots of Strawberries, Tomatoes, Sweet and Chile Peppers including Gypsy, Inferno and plenty of Padrones, Eggplant, Summer Squash, Green, Yellow and Romano Fresh Beans**, Cabbage, Asian Greens, Chard, Lettuce, Carrots, Beets, Turnips and Turnip Greens, Sweet Red Onions, Yellow Onions, Garlic, Dried Garlic Scapes, Sweet Corn on the Cob, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Cucumbers, and probably something I am forgetting. Oh, Sweet Basil.......Red, White and Blue Potatoes.....

The Hominy Grits (good weather for it now), Corn Meal of many colors (the Peruvian Black makes a spectacular corn bread), Hominy, Heirloom Dried Beans, the remaining Dried Chiles and Powders, Flavored Salts and the Jams.

** This is an incredibly delicious and simple fresh bean recipe. We had it last night. http://www.tierravegetables.com/FreshBeans.htm
Get a discount on the beans if you get over a pound.

OPEN TUESDAY - FRIDAY 11 - 6 AND SATURDAY 10 - 4 651 Airport Blvd, Santa Rosa, CA

Thanks to you all,

Evie

This Week(end) at the Tierra Vegetables Farm

Hi all,

There has been lots going on at the farm the past few days: transplanting Cabbages, Tomatoes, Yellow Storage Onions,  seeding some of the early Heirloom  Beans, Corn and Popcorn! Here is a link to Facebook if you'd like to see a few pictures: http://www.facebook.com/TierraVegetables

Yes, the Strawberries have started. As long as the weather cooperates we should have Strawberries at the Farm Stand the next few days. They are sweet and succulent as usual. Come have a taste before you buy!

Here's more: Asparagus, English Peas and Sugar Snap Peas, Rhubarb, Green Garlic, Potatoes, a few Baby Summer Squash, Chard, Favas (we had our first Fava/ Asparagus combo the other night: delicious!), Broccoli Rabe, maybe some Arugula if it has gotten big enough the past few days......

EGGS, EGGS, EGGS!  Sounds like it's Vegetable Frittata Time!

Plant Starts. I am not sure what we will have but think we may have Tomatoes and Basil to name a few.

Have you had our Hominy yet? It is fresh and full of flavor. It is ready to eat as it is but cook it a bit more for a softer texture if you like. It's up to you!

More: Heirloom Corn Meals, Dried Beans, Dried and Smoked Chiles and Salts of amazing flavor, Chile Jams and a few remaining Hot Sauces are all waiting for you at the good ol' Tierra Vegetables Farm Stand this week(end). Join our Frequent Buyer program! Ask me how!

Weekly box info: If you love our vegetables (and strawberries) but can't make it out to the farm, you can pick up our vegetables at convenient drop off points in Santa Rosa and Healdsburg.  You also can pick up at the farm, of course, as most everyone does. Recipes are included with every box! We are filling up so please let me know if you want to sign up or need more info. Thanks.  Note that we can add more drop off sites if we have enough people interested. (I tried to add the PDF file of the flyer but can't figure out how to do it at the moment. Please let me know and I can e-mail you one.

Hope to see you all at the Farm. It's an exciting time with lots going on. Take time to go for a little walk out to see what is coming up as spring is finally arriving!

Thanks,

Evie

Asparagus and Eggs!

Hi everyone,

First of all, Tierra Vegetables Farm Stand is OPEN Thursday and Friday 11 - 6 and Saturday 10 - 4.

More and more Asparagus is poking its head up out of the soil! It is a beautiful sight to see. You are all more than welcome to come on out and take a walk and see it for yourself. It's pretty cool to see them, poking out in the dirt, in their various stages. They grow quickly in warm weather; a few inches per day. The season is short so come take a look.

Another short season is our Salad Mix. I am calling it "magic". We eat huge bowls of salad most nights anyway but now we are heating HUGE bowls of salad with very little dressing. It is a mix of Lettuce, Arugula, Komatsuna, other Mustard, Pepper Grass and I think one more thing! Come have a taste before you buy.

EGGS. Our hens are laying up a storm! Come get some freshly laid, extremely delicious eggs to cook up with your Asparagus. Did I mention Spinach?

Okay, here's the list with a recipe from the Ceres Community Project Cookbook following:

Asparagus, Salad Mix, Rhubarb, Leeks, Potatoes, Chard, maybe a bit of Kale, maybe Baby Fennel, Green Garlic, Cabbage, last week of Carrots for awhile, Butternut Squash, Tender Spinach

Colorful Heirloom Corn Meal, Beans, Hot Sauce, Jams, Chiles, Powders, Salts, Chipotles, Parching Corn (Pinole), maybe Hominy; not sure about that.

Vegetable Frittata
adapted from Nourishing Connections, The Healing Power of Food and Community
by Cathryn Couch and JoEllen DeNicola
1 - 2 leeks, chopped A bunch of chard, spinach, combination
Any other vegetables hanging around Olive oil for sauteing
4 - 5 eggs 1/2 cup milk w/ a bit of buttermilk if you have any
1 cup grated cheddar or other favorite cheese (optional) 3/4 cup crumbled feta (optional) S & P

Saute the leek until tender, Add the chard/ spinach ribs/ roots, and cook for a few minutes. Add the rest w/ a bit of water if necessary, cover and simmer until wilted. Cook all the water out.
In separate bowl, beat the eggs and milk. Add sea salt, pepper and the cheddar cheese if you use it.
Add the vegetables to the egg mixture and pour this into an oiled 8 by 8 or similar size frittata pan.
Sprinkle feta on top.
Put into pre-heated 375 degree oven and bake 40 - 45 minutes until set in the middle. Serve warm or room temp.
Great the next day!

That's it for now. Hope to see you all at the Farm Stand this week(end).

Thanks,

Evie

Hello everyone,

Hope you are enjoying the new year. I must admit I am enjoying this weather but at the same time know it just isn't right! It should be raining!

We are patiently waiting for that rain. Wayne irrigated the cover crop for the first time in 36 years! It is very hard for me to see the sprinklers on at this time of year since our own Mother Nature should be doing the watering for us. That being said, i am grateful that we have the irrigation system for certain.

The Tierra Vegetables Farm Stand is OPEN Thursdays and Fridays from 11 - 6 and Saturdays 10 - 4. We have a wide variety of produce for your culinary needs. Yesterday, Lee and Dominique slaked Hopi Blue Corn and made posole/ hominy corn. This is gorgeous and delicious. Slaked corn has been boiled in water with added culinary lime, then rinsed very well. In the process the skins come off and the corn releases its bound niacin, making it more digestible! It is great cooked up with onions and a bit of oil (or butter, or water), made into posole, added to beans and/ or rice, or just eaten right out of the bowl! Come check it out. I know our CSA members are getting some today and I am rather sure we will have some for all of you as well.

More stuff: Carrots, Beets, Celery Root, Parsnips, Rutabaga, Salsify (better hurry, JG), Sunchokes, Potatoes, Leeks, Onions, Garlic, Fennel, Celery, Cauliflower, a bit of Broccoli, a bit of Cabbage, lots of Italian Greens such as Endive, Escarole, Puntarelle and more, Chard, Kale varieties, Butternut Squash, Pie Pumpkin and a few Kabocha Squash, Brussels Sprouts, gorgeous Cilantro (great mixed with the corn), what else?????

Taste of Tierra, Smoked Onion and Chipotle Salts (great of the Popcorn - hey- we have Popcorn too!), Enchilada, Mole and Salsa Verde "kits", Dried and Smoked Chiles and Powders....

Corn Meals such as Hopi Blue, Oaxacan Green, Bloody Butcher and (hopefully, if it gets ground) the Black Peruvian, more than 20 varieties of Heirloom Dried Beans.

Remember you are welcome to walk out into the field and check out what's going on. Hope to see you ambling ( jogging? skipping?) out to the Farm Stand at the White Barn!

Farm Stand Open for the winter!

Hello everyone,

Happy New Year! Hope you all enjoyed all the holiday cheer! We had a few days off to get caught up on a few projects. Now we are back and the Farm Stand will be OPEN three days a week all winter long.

The hours are THURSDAY AND FRIDAY 11 - 6 AND SATURDAY 10 - 4 for the next few months.

This weather, believe it or not, is not very conducive to growing. It has been too cold and dry. We are now irrigating which is unheard of in January! Wayne says he has never irrigated a winter cover crop in the 36 years he has been growing vegetables (starting in 1976 in Potter Valley). We hope it rains soon. If not, we will adjust.

In spite of the weather we have quite a variety of vegetables and of course the many extras such as Corn Meal, Hot Sauce, Dried Chiles and the Heirloom Dried Beans. Yesterday Lee ground up Black Corn (I think it's called Peruvian Black). It is gorgeous and ground up to a very fine flour. She says it will make great cookies. http://www.tierravegetables.com/CornMeal.htm
We will have it as some point this week once she gets it packaged up. Come check it out.

Here's most of what we have: Fresh Hominy Corn, Green, Red and at some point a bit (there's not much) Black Heirloom Corn Meal, almost 30 varieties of Heirloom Dried Beans such as Yellow Eye, Black Turtle, Hutterite and Tepary, Red and Blue Popcorn, Hot Sauces from mild to wild, Chile Jams, many varieties of Dried Chiles, Chipotles, Powders such as Harissa, Mole and Enchilada "Kits" Smoked Onion and Taste of Tierra Salts and lots more. Dried Tomatoes!

Fresh vegetables include Potatoes, Leeks, Onions, Garlic, Beets, Carrots, Rutabaga, Sunchokes, Celeriac, Salsify, Chard, Kale, Brussels Sprouts, Broccoli (not much), Cauliflower, many Chicories such as Pan di Zucchero, Castel Franco, Escarole and more, Fennel, Cilantro, what else???

Hope to see you all flocking into the Farm Stand at the White Barn! The weekly Raffle will continue so come on in and get a raffle ticket to win something fun!

OPEN THURSDAY AND FRIDAY 11 - 6 AND SATURDAY 10 - 4.

Thanks,

Evie
